🐝 Alabama State Is One of the Oldest HBCUs in America
Alabama State University was founded in 1867, just two years after the Civil War. It began as the Lincoln Normal School in Marion, Alabama, making it one of the oldest institutions of higher learning created specifically for Black Americans.
🐝 Founded by the "Marion Nine"
The university was started with just $500 raised by nine formerly enslaved men, now known as the Marion Nine. Their vision helped create what would become one of the nation's most influential HBCUs.
🐝 America's First State-Supported Black College
In 1874, Alabama assumed responsibility for the school, making Alabama State the first state-supported educational institution for Black Americans in the United States.
🐝 Located in the Heart of the Civil Rights Movement
The university sits in Montgomery, Alabama, one of the most important cities in American history. Montgomery was home to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church of Martin Luther King Jr., and many key moments of the Civil Rights Movement.
🐝 The Hornets Compete at NCAA Division I
Unlike many HBCUs, Alabama State competes at the NCAA Division I level and is a member of the prestigious Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
🎺 The Mighty Marching Hornets Are Legendary
The university's band, the Mighty Marching Hornets, is one of the most respected bands in HBCU culture. They have appeared in national documentaries, major films, the Honda Battle of the Bands, and the Rose Parade. Their performances routinely generate millions of online views.
🐝 Home of the Honey Beez
Alabama State's Honey Beez are one of the most famous dance teams in HBCU culture. They helped redefine collegiate dance by celebrating confidence, performance excellence, and body positivity.
